Mandala Project
Food Sustainability System
Based on Indian philosophy, it is a community irrigation system based on beds around a water source. Built in a small area with few resources, managing to guarantee food and income for our family. It will also be carried out in a pedagogical way, aiming to encourage students to apply on their property.
About the project
The Mandala System is a form of food production, where planting is done in a circular fashion. In this production system, the garden is planted in concentric circles that represent nature, where everything is rounded. Planting in circles, different from those developed by conventional agriculture, allow plants to help each other, working with concepts of windbreak curtains, insect repellent plants, honey plants and a series of secrets that nature teaches us and that also collaborate with the recovery of biodiversity and ecological control of insect pests as well as diseases and invasive plants. It is a simple system that consists of production in several beds around a single source of water for irrigation, evenly distributed to different plantations, allowing better use of resources such as water and soil. It is possible to carry out this method of production in small areas, and with few resources, thus providing subsistence and even income for those who adopt it, being directed to small landowners or rural associations.
At Espaço Ajna, the Project was divided into 3 stages. In the first stage, the fish tank was built with one of the 5m diameter holes made for the removal of land during the construction of the house. After the hole was ready, a geomembrane canvas was placed to waterproof it and two rows of superadobe plastered with cement to secure the canvas to the ground. In the second stage, the 8 flowerbeds were prepared and we started the production of vegetables, cassava, pumpkins, beans, dry rice and corn during the rainy season. Still in the second stage, we will continue to install solar pumps and the drip irrigation system so that production can supply food throughout the year. We will soon enter the third and final stage, which consists of fenced off the area between the pond and the plantation for raising chickens and ducks. Due to various animals (both domestic and wild) chasing birds, we need to fence off this area to keep the animals safe.
The Mandalla Project is a sustainable agriculture project and consists of developing the social, economic and environmental aspects of family farming in an integrated manner. You rarely find projects that address all of these values. It is an innovative process of sustainable development supported by the philosophy of holistic and systemic environmental harmony.
